tap washerQ:     I have been told that changing the washers in my bathroom taps is really easy but I am still scared to try. Is it really as easy as I'm told?

A:     Changing washers in your taps is easy. Here's how you do it, step by step.

1. Turn off the water supply, either at the mains or a tap near your fixture. If you are changing a hot tap washer you can turn off supply at the hot water system instead of closing the whole water supply to the house.

2. Open the tap with the worn washer. Turn it fully on.

3. Unscrew the tap head and lift the top of the tap away.

4. Throw the old washer away and insert a new one.

5. Refit tap head.

6. Turn water supply back on.

7. Now inspect for drips and leaks. Turn the tap on and off a few times to make sure it is working properly.
