Marcus Waters is ready to Kick Up Dust at Dungog

22 April 2010

Kick Up Dust is the latest script to be included to the In the Raw script readings lineup at Dungog Film Festival. Set in the tough world of bare fist boxing, the script sees Aboriginal cowboy, Elijah being reunited with his sister, Katie after a long absence. Marcus wrote this screenplay as a celebration of his own Aboriginality. This is a great opportunity for DFF to showcase Indigenous film talent.

Marcus Waters is a screenwriter, playwright, and currently a Convener of Screenwriting at Griffith University Gold Coast. Marcus is a member of the Kamilaroi First Nation Peoples of Australia.

After writing the stage play Where from You Come with Indigenous Theatre Company Kooemba Jdarra, Marcus committed himself full time to developing his craft as a scriptwriter. He was the inaugural winner of the AFTRS Macquarie Bank Scholarship in 2004, and while at AFTRS wrote two award-winning short films Too Little Justice and Fuse.

Marcus’ public service work has seen him receive a number of awards including the Queensland Public Service Award for “Recognition of Excellence” in both 2000 and 2001 for his work coordinating the Indigenous Capital Works and Apprenticeship strategy for Cape York.

Marcus has a number of projects in development, including a stage play with Yirri Yaakin the Indigenous Theatre Company in Perth and Kick up Dust with New Holland Pictures.
