Iron Sky Coming in 2012
14 December, 2011
Iron Sky, the much anticipated movie about nazis from the dark side of the moon coming back to take over the world, has been listed at number 17 in Den of Geek's Top 25 films to watch in 2012, ahead of Spiderman.
Iron Sky is a Finnish/German/Australian co-production and was filmed largely on the Gold Coast in January 2011, with Brisbane based New Holland Pictures the Australian producer. From a secret base in Antarctica, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right. Now it’s 2018, and the Nazi invasion is on its way to earth.
Iron Sky has attracted international attention not only for the storyline, but as a pioneer in Crowd Sourcing. The film has an impressive social media presence, with a loyal international fan base that has been growing over the past six years. Iron Sky reaches over 70.000 fans on Facebook and has around 300,000 visitors monthly to its website www.ironsky.net. One of the things that makes it special is the genuine two-way engagement the filmmakers have with their fans. Director Timo Vuorensola has regular video blogs on how the film is progressing. And fans have contributed to the creative on the film, designing spaceships, artwork and more, and also to the financing of the film through Crowd Funding.
"Crowd Funding is normally associated with low budget filmmaking," explained Australian producer Cathy Overett of New Holland Pictures, "but Iron Sky has turned that on its head. This film has been funded through traditional means and Crowd Investment has been used to fund the usual gap. What this means for the fans is that they have invested in a film with higher production values and therefore, I believe, a greater chance of return on investment". The film raised $750,000 of its $10million budget from Crowd Funding.
Having been filmed in Queensland and Germany, Iron Sky is now in post production in Finland, with music being composed by Slovenian band Laibach. The world premiere will be in Finland in April 2012 and it will be rolled out in cinemas around the world shortly thereafter. Hoyts is distributing in Australia/New Zealand.
